For an athlete, a musculoskeletal injury arising from practice or competition can be particularly devastating. As a Sports Medicine Physician & Orthopedic Surgeon I specialise in the diagnosis, and both non-surgical and surgical treatment and rehabilitation of sports-related injuries. Throughout my 25 years’ experience, I have conducted thousands of procedures and cared for thousands of athletes, helping them get back to practicing and playing the sports they love with confidence.
KNEE AND SHOULDER RELATED SURGERIES
Knee and Shoulder injuries are common, happening for a variety of reasons. As a complex joint with many components, the knee is particularly vulnerable with common injuries including fractures, dislocations, sprains, and ligament tears. As the most flexible joint in the human body, the shoulder allows you to move and rotate your arm in many directions. This flexibility also makes it more susceptible to instability and injury. My focus is early and correct diagnosis and treatment of knee and shoulder related injuries – be it surgical or nonsurgical. Considerate, careful, and empathetic diagnosis and treatment based on extensive experience will have significant impact in terms of speedy and effective recovery.
ADVANCED ARTHROSCOPIC AND JOINT REPLACEMENTS
Arthroscopy is a surgical procedure whereby we use small instruments fitted with a camera to visualize, diagnose, and treat problems inside a joint. Through a small incision, this procedure can be used to diagnose and treat a variety of acute or chronic joint conditions or injuries. When possible, it generally means less recovery time than a more ‘open’ surgery.  I also specialize in joint replacement surgery on hips, knees, and shoulders for older patients. This involves using prosthetic materials to match the original joints, engineered with metal and plastic parts that are designed to move just like regular joints, providing pain relief, and often full movement, for at least 10 years.

With over 25 years of experience in Orthopedics spanning Australia, India and the GCC, Dr. George Varghese combines medical expertise with compassion, empathy and understanding of each patient’s individual needs.

Dr. Varghese specialises in Sports Medicine, Knee and Shoulder Related Surgeries, and Advanced Arthroscopic and Joint Replacements. Along with in-depth skill and surgical mastery, he also brings a unique perspective and level of empathy as a former age-group ranked tennis player. Through providing top quality care to tens of thousands of patients throughout his career, Dr. Varghese has also held posts as the Official Doctor for the Dubai Tennis Championships on two separate occasions.

Currently working at Al Zahra Hospital in Dubai as a Specialist Orthopedic Surgeon, Dr Varghese holds a MBBS as well as a Master of Surgery in Orthopedics and completed his Fellowship in Adult Reconstruction and Arthroplasty at the University of Melbourne in Australia. Prior to working in Dubai, Dr Varghese worked as Associate Professor and Head of Department of Joint Surgery for 10 years at the Jubilee Mission Medical College, Kerala, India. He is a member of the Arthroscopic Association of North America and the International Society of Arthroscopy, Knee Surgery and Orthopaedic Sports Medicine (ISAKOS). He speaks fluent English and Hindi and has a basic understanding of Arabic.
